Peak Season CX Race 3: this Sunday 1/28/07

Howdy folks- the last cyclocross race on the Norcal calendar this season will be held this Sunday at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville.
Hosted by the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club, this will also be the last race of the three-race Peak Season Cyclocross series. Going into this final event, several area riders have already sewn up their series titles, while others will be looking for decent results to propel them into overall series medal positions.
Of particular note is the much heralded "Team Relay Race," in which each four-person team has one rider on the course at a time. Each team will have a designated box at the start grid. We'll have a LeMans start, where the starting riders gather about 100 yards away from their bikes and run to their bikes, which will be waiting for them with their respective rear wheels removed. The riders have to mount their own wheels and take off for their lap. When they come in they tag their teammate, who also has to affix their own rear wheel.
This continues (ad nauseum) until all teams are either finished or we take pity on the poor souls who can't get their wheels in and give them assistance. Single speeders must disrobe entirely and put their clothes on backwards. Just kidding, we'll make you run a short distance!
Russ & Nancy from Abbiorca captured the action from a previous relay race and they still have a few photos up: http://tinyurl.com/bh9ox
We will have a *much* shorter lap for the Team Relay. This will make it so the wheel change plays a much more integral part of how the teams finish. Just because you're fast on the course doesn't mean you're fast at changing a wheel!
The Team Relay will cost just $5 per rider. Teams need to consist of four riders but you can always make up a team at the race with other riders looking for teams. If you can't find enough riders for your team, just ask someone!
Registration opens at 8am, and more information is available at http://www.cyclocross.cx or by calling (831) 423-0897.
Thank you,
David Gill Peak Season Race Director

Santa Cruz County Cyclocross Championships: Sunday 1/14

The 2007 Santa Cruz County Cyclocross Championships (SCCCC) will be held Sunday, January 14th at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville. Hosted by the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club (SCCCC), these Championships are now in their third year. That's right, it's alliteration at its finest: the 2007 SCCCC put on by SCCCC! Whichever County resident places highest in each of the 19 categories will be named County CX Champion, and will receive a special prize befiitting this honor.

The County Cyclocross Championships bring out the finest cyclocross racers not only from Santa Cruz County, but Northern California and even Europe. The local cyclocross scene is abuzz with the news that not only will recent Santa Cruz County covert Barry Wicks from Team Kona be in attendance, but also Joe McCall from Team WORC of Dublin, Ireland. While Wicks placed sixth at the recent USA National Cyclocross Championships in Providence, Rhode Island, McCall matched that with a sixth-placed finish in the recent Irish National Championships in Banbridge Academy, Ireland. McCall is coming out to test the local talent, a challenge from which Wicks will not back down. While these two wage battle, they might be on the lookout for a dark horse who may steal the limelight in this heady affair. Watch for Aaron Kereluk of Soquel, Justin Robinson of Bonny Doon, or Simon Vickers of Santa Cruz to take advantage of any slipup between the two favorites for the Elite Men's title. Registration opens at 8am and more information is available at http://www.cyclocross.cx or by calling David Gill at 831.423.0897.

CCCX SERIES FINAL THIS SUNDAY JAN.7 AT FT. ORD DAY CAMP.

The 2006-07 edition of the Central Coast Cyclocross series concludes this
coming Sunday Jan. 7 at the day camp portion of the East Garrison area of Ft
Ord. The weather looks to be grand and is shaping up to be perfect cycling
conditions. After this last rain the dirt should be awesome for Cyclocross,
with a little bit of slick stuff in the shaded tree area's, and grippy
traction every where else. The course in this section of East Garrison is
very fun to race on, and it features elevation change, fire roads, single
track, pavement, mandatory dismounts, and one run-up section. This should
be a welcome change after the 'Mud War" of CCCX #4 when it rained and rained
and rained, turning the course into mud mayhem and certain sections into
small ponds and streams.

Some division titles are settled going into the final race, but others will
come down to a final race show-down for the series win. The men's B
division is extremely close with these three riders headed for a gun fight
in the former Army Base at Ft Ord, Geoff Wilcox(Raleigh) , Max
Clifford(Team N.O.T.S.), and Lander Bravo(Lapierre/ Ritchey). The "Ultimate
Fighter" battle looks to be in the Women's 35+ division where Shawna
Potocky(Spokesman Bicycles) and Julianna Perry(Team Santa Cruz-SCCCC) are
locked in a epic tussle for series honors. The two talented female racers
are separated by only one small point, so who ever crosses the finish line
first out of the two should end up series champion. In the Women's C
division Jenny Fiex(2 kids & a Mortgage) and Lauren Haughey(S.F. Sport &
Spine) are separated by a mere two points, so the best finisher on the day
between the two will most likely claim top series honors. If it comes down
to a tie, the tie breaker is determined by who places higher in the final
race. Frank Cuaresma(San Jose Bike Club) in the 55+ division is the only
undefeated rider posting 4 wins in 4 races, and looks set to claim series
MVP Honors if he has one more win in those muscular legs of his.

The CCCX series would like to congratulate all the Northern California
racers who traveled to Rhode Island to compete in the National
Championships. Nor Cal racers made a great impression at the Cal Giant Inc
sponsored National Championship event claiming many fine finishes and
results.

The CCCX Series would also like to thank its sponsors who make a strong
effort to support Cyclocross Racing in Northern California: Fox Racing Shox,
Monster Energy, WTB, Ritchey, Hot Shoppe Design Factory, Cal Giant Inc., The
Vitamin Shoppe, Calabazas Cyclery, Castro Valley Cyclery, Trail Head Cycles,
Family Cycling Center, Scotts Valley Cycle Sport, Joselyns, Pegasus Bicycle
Works.
