2008 NCNCA Cup presented by Santa Cruz - New Sponsors, Races, and Venues
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
2008 NCNCA Cup presented by Santa Cruz - New Sponsors, Races, and Venues
3 Santa Cruz Stigmata Frames and Timbuk2 bags up for grabs
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - September 22, 2008 - Santa Cruz Bicycles has signed on as the title sponsor for the 2008-2009 NCNCA Cup and will be offering up 3 Santa Cruz Stigmata frames to lucky winners at the series finale on Jan. 4th. Timbuk2 Designs has also graciously kicked in custom NCNCA Cup embroidered messenger bags for series winners in all categories.
The NCNCA Cup is a regional premier series collecting the best and most popular cyclocross races in Northern California and Nevada and combining them into one region-wide, season-long championship series. Now in its second year, the NCNCA Cup is bigger and better with an expanded prize list and new race venues.2008 NCNCA Cup Races
For our 2008-2009 NCNCA Cup Schedule, we have spiced things up a bit. The series will kick off on October 12th on a brand new CCCX course - Keith Defiebre is finalizing one of two courses that he promises will be among the finest cx courses Nor-cal has to offer (UPDATE: looks like Laguna Seca!). Race Two on October 26th is the spooky return of Velo Bella's always fun, always hilarious Spirit of Surf City Halloween Race at Soquel HS. New this year is a back-to-back weekend (races 3-4) on November 8-9 with the Sacramento and Sagebrush series' teaming up for a great weekend of racing. Kick off the road trip with a journey to one of our district's best courses at Sagebrush's Hidden Valley Park in Reno on Saturday, then on the way back, hit Rich Maile's humdinger of a course at Discovery Park in Sacrameno on Sunday on the return trip. Race 5 on November 30th, will be the return of Bay Area Super Prestige's most popular venue, Golden Gate Park. And finally, on January 4th (finals) the NCNCA Cup takes its first foray into the "Peak Season" and celebrates the New Year with a grand finale at everyone's favorite venue - Watsonville Fairgrounds. Everyone should be on-hand to enjoy some epic racing, cheer on the series winners, and cross their fingers that they'll go home with some great prizes - maybe even one of the Santa Cruz frames...

About Santa Cruz Bicycles
While primarily known for cutting edge full suspension mountain bikes, by dint of name alone, Santa Cruz Bicycles has an obligation to cyclocross. IF you're gonna have a bike company based in surf city, you should probably step up and get dirty in wintertime. That obligation was largely ignored (with the exception of a handful of masochistically inclined employees) until the fall of 2007, when the Stigmata was quietly introduced.
It's a no BS 'cross bike. Light, sweet handling, made right here in the Yew Ess of Ehh, out of Easton tubing, the Stigmata is the bike for the other half of the misfit army that works here at SCB. We don't expect it to set the world on fire in terms of sales, but it is the bike that those of us here wanted, so that we could race something with our name on it.

Cyclocross and Mountain Bike Clinics This Weekend
(note: these are both co-ed clinics...and yours truly is putting on the CX clinic)
Wow! This has been the year for Velo Girls clinics. Every weekend we've had sold-out road clinics for both women and men.
This weekend, we switch the focus to the dirt. I'll be co-coaching two new off-road clinics for 2008:
Bike Skills 102 -- Mountain Bike Skills (co-ed)
Saturday, Sept 13th -- 1:00pm - 5:00pm -- Palo Alto
Ron Castia and I have developed a fabulous clinic that will meet the needs of novice and intermediate mountain bikers alike. Filled with skills, skills, skills, you'll ride away understanding balance, weight distribution, terrain, and equipment., ready to conquer switchbacks and jumps and drops and dirt of all types.
Ron Castia has been riding and racing for 11 years. He's a CAT2 on the road and for cyclocross and a semi-pro mountain bike racer. His mountain bike career highlights include a victories at the 24 Hours of Adrenaline, Sea Otter Classic, and the 24 Hours of Tahoe. He has been mentoring and coaching informally for many years and just received his USA Cycling Coach License.
Ron is the founder, chief cook and bottle washer of the East Bay Cyclists -- InfoVista Cycling.

Unravel the mysteries of this cult sport. Learn what all the cool kids do to have fun in the fall. We'll teach you to run and jump and fly up hills carrying your bike! We'll mount, dismount, suitcase and shoulder. All you need is a cyclocross or mountain bike, a sense of adventure, and a smile! We'll share information about riding and racing, equipment, and all the other fun stuff this incredible sport involves. Once you've tried it.....you'll be hooked!
Who better to coach a cyclocross clinic than the Mack-Daddy of NorCal Cyclocross, John Funke! John did the full conversion from roadie-ism to cyclocross after moving to Northern California in 1998 and realizing there was much more to life than 100-mile road rides. He races Elite and Masters for Sycip Racing, and occasionally finds his way to the lower steps of the podium in spite of nagging back problems, two young boys, and a rock-star wife. John is the editor and webmaster of the NCNCA Cyclocross Website for fun and works for Fujitsu Labs the rest of the time. His blog is at whatfunk.blogspot.com.
Registration is limited but there is still space available for both of these clinics -- clickity-click for all the deets:

2008 Bay Area Super Prestige Cyclocross Series
presented by Kaiser-Permanente/Team Oakland
Seizoen Zes (and for the Dutch challenged that’s “Season Six”) is scheduled to launch on October 19th as Pilarcitos Cyclesports kicks off their 2008 season in San Francisco’s McLaren Park. The BASPCX has been invited back to the same 5 venues used in the past seasons and celebrates a remarkable 11th return to Coyote Point Park in December to close out the season for Pilarcitos Cyclesports.
The 5 event series has signed Kaiser-Permanente/Team Oakland as their presenting sponsor for 2008 and the new support will allow the staff to light up not only Elite prizelists but their 3rd event of the season in Brisbane will also benefit from the special “illumination” provided by Kaiser-Permanente. Elite Men and Women will earn podium cash at each event in the series as well as contribute to the overall series payoff - and will include Masters for 2008. And for the first time the BASPCX series will feature a signature Night race, with great respect for the pioneering efforts by Washington’s “Star-Crossed” event and the new “Cross Vegas” extravaganza. Sierra Point in Brisbane will be the scene on Saturday night, November 15th for Round 3 of the BASPCX series with the final 4 events run “under the lights”.
Round 1 – McLaren Park, San Francisco – October 19th – features the most significant run-up in the entire series – almost 50 yards long. Park staff have allowed a greater extension of the course on nearby football fields that will slightly alter the characteristics of former McLaren Park races.
Round 2 – Candlestick Point Recreation Area – November 2nd – in the shadow of the 49’er football stadium, this former landfill may have a few new surprises if Northern California gains it’s first noticeable rainfall prior to this date. But with a refurbished “Gater” that holds a 40 gallon water tank, the dust will be partially “tamed” even if the course remains dry.
Round 3 – Sierra Point, Brisbane – Saturday Night November 15th – the tightest circuit on the BASPCX schedule and the only one where judicious use of portable construction light units would allow a night circuit, Sierra Point will bring out the glamour and excitement of night time events. Just like football, baseball, and tennis displayed at night – cyclocross is made for the razzle-dazzle showcase of night racing.
Round 4 – Golden Gate Park, San Francisco – November 30th – site of the USGP finale in 2005 and a season favorite for many, the soft dirt horse trails and electric atmosphere racing “in the PARK!” make Golden Gate Park a highlight for many racer’s seasons.
Round 5 – CCCP – Cyclo Cross @ Coyote Point, San Mateo – December 7th – the infamous “Beach Run” with San Francisco Bay just a few feet away during winter high tides create a great finish to the season and a race that has held C1,C2 and C3 UCI status in previous seasons.

CXSR Registration is Open - UPDATE: Added Master 45 and 55 Cats
For Immediate Release
Bike Monkey to host Santa Rosa's first ever cyclocross series in multiple parks within the city limits.
UPDATE 9/7 from Carlos: Added Master 45 and 55 Cats
On October 4th the first of a 5-event series will kick off at Doyle Park near downtown Santa Rosa and light up the north bay area with yet another (new) series of events.
Last year's inaugural event was used to pitch the city on the idea of cyclocross racing, and after achieving front-page press and a wildly successful end result the city climbed on board to promote a series whos championship event will take place right downtown at Juilliard Park on the eve of the arrival of the Tour of California in 2009. Make your plans to attend this series that finishes on one of the biggest cycling weekends in the state.
Registration for CXSR is now open at http://www.BikeMonkey.net
