Final weekend for Bay Area Super Prestige CycloCross Series

Final weekend for Bay Area Super Prestige CycloCross Series

Bring those series numbers with you for our season-ending final weekend of racing

So far our season has been dry and dusty – 1st at Candlestick, then last weekend in Golden Gate Park but we may have seen the last of those ‘cross conditions for this season – our weather forecast for this coming week is very interesting – possibly 3 days of rain this week and that’s going to make for a fascinating final weekend at Coyote Point.

We’ve got a special performance enhancer on Sunday – for our final race of the 2005 season, double points will be awarded in Sunday’s CCCP beach run special and our sponsor partners have offered some super prizes for categories to challenge each other until the final seconds of the race.

Kelly Bike Co. is sponsoring ‘cross frames and forks for the winners of Men’s Cateogry “B” and Women’s Category “B”. Currently Mighty Max Spirin holds the lead after 2 second place finishes at Candlestick. In the Women’s competition Katrina Baumsteiger, with a win and a 2nd place is the leader.

For our Men’s Category “C”, our traditional Bianchi “Axis” full ‘cross bike is the prize waiting for sunday’s finale and we have a dogfight on our hands with 4 riders within 2 points of each other.

Roaring Mouse Cycles has provided a Felt ‘cross frame in Women’s Cat. “C” for the top prize in the category, and currently Julian Foley enjoys a strong lead.

Please check the website for current point standings and we’ll see you for Saturday’s Bianchi ‘cross – (all celeste/all the time) and Sunday’s tribute to the World’s best singers at CCCP – Cyclo Cross @ Coyote Point.

And while I was walking/talking with the ranger today, discussing course layout and verboten areas, she mentioned that the abandoned restaurant that we race past has plans for a rejuvenation – how far in the future that may occur is still being determined. Alec and I will take careful looks at the area to see if we still can race on our classic circuit if the restaurant is open for lunch/brunch. We’ll keep you in the loop.

As a 45+ it should be a hobby. If you want respect, race the Elite A's. And on that note, the Overall Winner of the Elite A's recieved only $160! For the WHOLE season! No pay-outs for the individual races! It's about time that the Elite Men & Women (The "Main Events" plus they might be trying to make a living) and the Juniors (The Future of our sport) recieve the MAJORITY of the prizes. It's ridiculous that any "B" category recieves more than the Elites. I'm all for grass-roots (The Juniors), but come on now - if you are not an Elite AND you are old - it's a hobby. If you want a prize for every race, run a 10k and get a free t-shirt.

Great races, great series, poor distribution of prizes.

Whoa ... sounds like the term "Elite" has really gone to that guys head. Do they make a helmet big enough for that swollon, self-important mellon of his? What arrogance!! Not like most of the crossers I've met in the 5 short seasons since I first discovered the sport. Sounds to me like a guy who is an "Elite" only on paper ... you know the type ... the guy who routinely finishes 3-4 minutes off the pace and should by rights be racing B's, where he might actually be competetive, you know, maybe crack the top 15 occasionally, but likes being able to brag that he's an "Elite" racer. And who the *%#@ is he tell anybody what is or isn't a hobby? I race 15-20 races a season, drive 300+ miles every race weekend, arrive at oh-dark-thirty to warm up for a 9am start, juggle my training between a real job, a real life, a real family, spend a ton of my own money, all in my "old" age. Not for the money! Only because I love Cyclo Cross - the fun, the commaraderie, the physical challenge, the thrills and spills, the cool unique people; and when I'm on it, an occasional medal or prize bag. If he's in it for the money, he's in it for the wrong reason. I'd suggest increasing his training to the point where he's good enough to get a real corporate sponsorship ... then go to Europe and race against the real "Elite" racers, like Page. Or at the least finish in the top 5 of our own Grand Prix. Then you might be able to make a meager living at Cross. Baring that, come back when you're "old", say 47ish, and are still criss crossing the state to race 15-20 races a season, and going to Europe for the Masters World Championships - as a "hobby". Then we might be inclined to listen to anything you have to say. Oh by the way ... remember, it's the entry fees from all us "old "not Elite" "hobby" racers, the C's and B's, Masters and Juniors, that cover the cost or your "Elite" payouts ... You're Welcome!!! We all deserve your respect for that at least, even if you don't respect your fellow crossers for whatever level of commitment to racing they're able to maintain, "hobby" or otherwise.

If the total payout for the season prize for the "A's" was only $160 for 1st (and no pay out for individual races), their own entry fee's payed for their prizes. NOT yours! 4 x $30 = $120. So in the end he "made" $40. YOU are welcome!

Also, you can be serious and it still be a hobby. But no matter what you might believe - The Elite Men, Women, and Juniors are the "Now" and the "Future". The Masters are the "Yesterdays".

Case in point: Would you ever pay to go watch a Master anything "game", or would you rather pony up to watch the best? Please no dillusional answers.

PS I don't even race, so I'm biased by reallistic obsevation with my "swollen, self absorbed mellon". Touche'!
